MPs Attend IPU SDGs Self-Assessment Seminar

Members of Parliament have been reminded about their vital responsibility in advancing sustainable development in ensuring that the voices and needs of our people are reflected in national priorities.

In opening the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Self-AssessmentSeminar for the Fijian Parliament this morning, Speaker the Hon. Filimone Jitoko stated that such roles also include the legislative in ensuring that laws promote sustainable and inclusive development.

Hon. Jitoko added that scrutinising and holding the Executive accountable, was imperative for the effective implementation of the SDGs.

“The success of these functions depends on how effectively you integrate the SDGs into every aspect of your parliamentary work,” he said.

As we move through this seminar, I encourage open and constructive dialogue. This is a safe space for honest reflection embracing progress, not perfection.”

“The outcomes of your discussions will shape a clear and practical action plan for the months ahead. They will guide us in strengthening our processes, building our capacity, and enhancing our impact.”

“Let us also remember that the SDGs are not abstract global targets. They are about real improvements in the lives of Fijians: reducing poverty; improving health and education; addressing climate change; and ensuring equal opportunities for all.”

Hon. Jitoko informed Honourable Members that the seminar is not so much about recognising and realising the progress they have made.

“It is also about asking ourselves some important and sometimes challenging, hard-headed questions: Are we systematically integrating the SDGs into every aspect of our parliamentary work?  How effective are we in scrutinising policies and budgets through the lens of the SDGs?

“Are we doing enough to engage the people we represent? And most importantly, how can we improve?”

Hon. Jitoko further stated that the workshop has been designed to help participants reflect honestly, identify gaps, and agree on concrete actions that will strengthen their roles as parliamentarians in advancing sustainable development.

Leader of the Opposition the Hon. Inia Seruiratu said, “Fiji made a commitment in 2015 and it’s important that MPs know their roles as ‘bridges’ between its international commitment and its local implementation.”

Minister for Fisheries and Forestry the Hon. Alitia Bainivalu described the workshop as an eye-opener as it revealed areas they could work on to deliver SDGs.
