Speaker of the Fijian Parliament the Hon. Filimone Jitoko has focussed attention to the lived realities of Pacific peoples during a screening of ‘The Forgotten Pacific’ held on the margins of the 152nd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Istanbul, Turkiye.
In his remarks, the Hon. Speaker said the documentary sheds light on Pacific stories that are often overlooked, highlighting the resilience, identity, and strength of communities facing climate change, displacement, and development challenges.
“For the Pacific, these are not distant stories; they are lived realities,” he said, noting that the Pacific Small Island Developing States (‘PSIDS’) continue to face serious challenges related to climate‑induced migration and displacement.
The Speaker highlighted the timeliness of the screening, coming shortly after Fiji was impacted by Tropical Cyclone Vaianu, with further weather disturbances forecast in the region. He said such events underscore both the vulnerability of Pacific islands, and the unity and resilience of their people.
“As Parliaments, we are entrusted with the responsibility to ensure that no voice is forgotten,” Speaker Jitoko said, emphasising the importance of people‑centred, inclusive, and forward‑looking governance.
He also commended the makers of ‘The Forgotten Pacific’ for telling Pacific stories with authenticity and respect, describing the documentary as a powerful platform for awareness, dialogue, and global action.
Addressing questions about the delegation’s presence despite recent cyclones and global instability, Speaker Jitoko said the Fijian delegation travelled to Istanbul with special Government dispensation to fulfil an important mission, in keeping with the theme of the documentary: “Lest We Forget.”
Whilst the Pacific may appear small on the world map, he said, its people share the same aspirations for dignity, quality of life, and a secure future for generations to come.
The Speaker concluded by appealing to the audience to watch the documentary with empathy, openness, and understanding, describing it as a collective cry for help from the peoples of the Pacific.
The event was organised by the Australian Embassy in Turkiye.
