Speaker urges journalists to upskill themselves

Speaker of Parliament the Hon. Filimone Jitoko has urged journalists to invest and upskill themselves with knowledge of digital communication, investigative techniques, and public engagement.
This, he said, would help journalists prepare themselves for the ever-evolving nature of the media industry.
In addressing media editors, guests, lecturers and students of the University of Fiji at the launching of the University’s Press Club in Suva, Hon. Jitoko said that as a result of such investment, journalists could help keep things fair by supporting independent watchdogs and regulators that check for honesty and protect privacy, making sure information is shared responsibly.
“Transparency is essential, but so too is the careful protection of privacy, national security and sensitive matters,” Hon. Jitoko said.
“As journalists, you must exercise good judgment and follow the principle of proportionality when reporting on sensitive matters. I am very mindful of the present efforts by the Government and the Ministry of Information in holding a Communication Conference, bringing together media offices of ministries and authorities to strengthen and enhance their skills in dealing with mass media.”
“In my view, it can only benefit both the Government and the public through you, the journalist.”
The Hon. Speaker concluded with a call for action, for the aspiring journalists to advocate for, and pursue, access to information, use digital platforms responsibly, and engage in public discourse with integrity. To become champions of transparency, accountability, and unity, as their commitment would shape the future of Fiji’s democracy and media landscape.
