Research and Library Services

The Research and Library Services of the Fiji Parliament is here to help all Members of Parliament get the information they need to do their job. We do this in a non-partisan and objective manner.

Our services include: a research request service, proactive research and support for committees, and the administration of the Fiji Parliament Library. Our collection of ‘Bill summaries’ is also available here to download Gender Data Hub.

Request service

The confidential research request service allows Members of Parliament to ask us to research specific issues relating to their parliamentary work.
Examples of such requests could be:

  • ‘What are the international definitions of ‘violence against women’?’
  • ‘How many countries have been affected by the Zika virus?’
  • ‘What are the existing laws on land degradation in Fiji?’
  • ‘Can I have a briefing on climate change in Fiji?’

To make a request:

  • Fill out this form and email it to research@parliament.gov.fj;
  • Drop by the Library; or
  • Call in to the Research Team office (on the first floor of the Parliament complex, next to the small committee room), and speak to a member of staff.

When we receive your request, the researcher with responsibility for that subject area will be in touch to confirm a deadline.

Proactive research and support for committees

The other part of our role is proactive research. This service is twofold:

  • providing briefing, advice and support to Parliamentary committees; and
  • publishing research briefings (such as Bill summaries, which are available below) to help MPs, committees and the wider public understand the laws and policies being looked at by Parliament.
    Please note that while these publications are available on the Parliament website (below), we cannot provide information to the press or public.

The Fiji Parliament Library

The Library (on the ground floor of the Parliament complex) houses a collection of books, journals, records and other documents, which are curated to help MPs and staff in their parliamentary research.

Our two librarians can source specific documents and arrange inter-library loans.

The Library opening hours are:
Monday – Thursday: 8am – 4.30pm, and
Friday: 8am – 4pm,
with a special schedule during sitting period.

What we cannot do

Due to our overarching principle of impartiality, we cannot provide:

  • legal advice;
  • information that does not relate to an MP’s parliamentary role;
  • information to the public or media, as our service is focused on MPs and their staff;
  • critiques or pros and cons of a particular policy or law; or
  • advice on specific cases, such as legal disputes, individual citizens’ cases or similar.

It is important to note that these briefings have been prepared to assist consideration of the Bill by Members of Parliament. They have no official status. Although every effort has been made to ensure accuracy, they should not be taken as a complete or authoritative guide to the Bill. Other sources should be consulted to determine the subsequent official status of the Bill.
