Members Of Parliament Attend Vital Climate Change Seminar

Two members of Parliament are currently in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam attending an important Seminar on climate change.

The Deputy Speaker Hon. Ruveni Nadalo and the Assistant Minister for Local Government, Housing and Environment Hon. Lorna Eden are currently attending the three day seminar which is titled ‘Responding to climate change – Action of legislators to achieve the SDGs.

The Seminar aims to identify which practical steps parliaments can take to support the implementation of the SDGs in their respective countries and in the region as a whole. Special emphasis will be placed on sharing experience and increasing understanding about how parliaments in the Asia-Pacific region could institutionalise the global goals, promotes convergence and build coherence at the policy level.

Hon. Lorna Eden will also be a panellist in a session titled ‘International commitments and requirements for national, legislators’. The international community had already agreed that national commitments in response to climate change at global level were reflected in the Paris Climate Change Agreement and will be specified by Nationally Determined Contributions of each country. The panel discussion will be focussed on the question – What are the law-making and policy-making requirements of each country to fulfil international commitments?
The seminar will be held from 11 to 13 May, 2017.
