The Fijian Parliament, host of the 5th Pacific Islands Parliaments Group (PIPG) Conference, has reaffirmed its full commitment to ensuring the success of this pivotal regional gathering.
With the support of its dedicated staff, the Parliament pledges to provide an environment that fosters meaningful dialogue and collaboration.
In his welcome remarks, the Speaker of the Fijian Parliament the Hon. Filimone Jitoko emphasised the Parliament’s determination to make every participant’s experience both productive and personally enriching.
“We are committed to supporting your engagement and creating a welcoming, inclusive and effective space for our Pacific parliamentary community,” he stated.
Special appreciation was extended to the Assembly of French Polynesia for its generous provision of French interpreters, enhancing accessibility and inclusivity at the Conference.
The Conference builds on the work of the PIPG Working Group, which convened in February in Papeete under the leadership of the Hon. Antony Geros, President of the French Polynesian Assembly.
The Group developed a draft framework to be presented and deliberated upon during the Conference, with the hope of achieving consensus and formal endorsement.
The Speaker echoed the sentiments of his predecessor, the President of the Republic of Fiji, His Excellency Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu who had passionately articulated Fiji’s vision for a united regional voice in global development discussions.
“Parliaments must be at the forefront of these efforts,” the Speaker affirmed.
Gratitude was also expressed to the Parliament’s development partners; the governments of Australia, Japan and New Zealand—and other international friends and observers whose continued support strengthens democratic institutions across the Pacific.
The Speaker also acknowledged the UNDP Fiji Parliament Support Project for its steadfast commitment to parliamentary growth and resilience in Fiji and throughout the region.
