The members of the Working Group of the Pacific Islands Parliament Group successfully concluded their meeting at the Assembly of French Polynesia in Papeete, Tahiti yesterday.
Eighteen recommendations were agreed to, which will be tabled at the full membership of the PIPG at the 5th Conference which will be held in Fiji in August this year.
The Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Inia Seruiratu, on behalf of the Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Filimone Jitoko, thanked the host, the Speaker of the French Polynesia, Hon. Anthony Geros for his chairmanship and stewardship of the meeting.
“The Working Group came here with a mandate to put together a framework for the restructuring of the PIPG.”
“The discussions have been very collegial, we exchanged views and debated on our issues in the spirit of collaboration and with the intention of having a successful outcome.”
“I’m thankful to the members of the Working Group that we are able to come to an agreement on the 15 recommendations that will be tabled in the next meeting in August.”
Hon. Seruiratu noted that bulk of the work will be carried out now, with the Secretariat in consultation with the Working Group so that the outcomes will reach all the members so they can come prepared for the upcoming meeting.
Later in the evening, Hon. Geros hosted all the delegation to a farewell dinner and also took the time to thank all the members of the Working Group for the successful meeting and looks forward to visiting Fiji in August.
