Speaker, A first for Ba Provincial Council

The delegates for the Ba Provincial Council Meeting were grateful that the Speaker, Hon. Dr Jiko Luveni accepted their invitation to be their chief guest for their annual event yesterday, Tuesday 25th July 2017.

Chairman, Ratu Tevita Momoedonu said that this was the first-ever Provincial Council in Fiji to be opened by the Speaker of Parliament.

“Today is a special day for us as we heard from the Speaker of Parliament explaining her role and how she controls the debate in Parliament.”

“To many of us, a lot of things she shared today was educational and it helps us to understand Parliament better.”

“I hope that other Provincial councils will also invite the Speaker to share the same information with them,” Ratu Momoedonu added.

For the women that were listening during the presentation, they were encouraged to see that one of their own has created history for Fiji as the first woman Speaker.

72-year old Kolora Momoedonu said that the Speaker has really done well in controlling the debate in Parliament, with the Standing Orders as her guideline.

“Speaker shared her experience whilst attending a meeting with 56 other women Speakers and for Fiji to have a woman Speaker is history and she has done very well.”

“She lets the Parliamentarians argue and then knows exactly when to come in,” Mrs Momoedonu said.

Hon. Dr Luveni continued with her Meet the Speaker programme last night at Navuavua and Navutulevu villages in Ra.

This morning, the Speaker will be at Penang Sangam High School.
