Speaker clarifies doubt about the word “Order”

Why does the Speaker use the word “Order” often during Parliament sittings?

This was the question asked by a woman in Colo-i-Suva village during the “Meet the Speaker” programme yesterday.

Speaking on behalf of the women in the iTaukei language, 78-year-old Ilisapeci Kobiti echoed that most of them wondered why the Speaker used such word when watching live Parliament sittings on television.

Mrs Kobiti said there were a lot of things about the Speaker’s role that most of them knew little about.

While she understood that it was no easy task to be a Speaker, she commended Hon. Dr Jiko Luveni for exercising good judgement and decisions in Parliament, given that she is a woman.

Mrs Kobiti further added the programme was timely as most of them, particularly the senior citizens, now have a better understanding about the important role of the Speaker, among other important information.

The Speaker explained to the villagers the rules used in Parliament and also shared ways Fijians can actively engage in the works of Parliament.

Village headman Joseva Ravia said they were grateful indeed to the Speaker for taking time out to visit and enlighten them about the roles and functions of Parliament, its works and how they can better engage with its Members.
