Fiji to host the 2025 PIPG Conference

At the end of the 4th Pacific Islands Parliamentary Group (PIPG) Conference in Koror, Palau, the Hon. Speaker Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu announced that Fiji would host the 5th PIPG Conference. An announcement that was greatly welcomed by all Members of the PIPG.

On the future of the cooperation of legislative branches in the Pacific, a Working Group, consisting of French Polynesia, Tonga, Solomon Islands, Palau and Fiji, has been mandated to analyse the options proposed by the PIPG Secretariat. The Working Group will will meet later this month and subsequently consult with and report back to all PIPG Members for approval by the end of 2024, which will be formalised at the next Conference in Fiji.

The Leader of the Opposition the Hon. Inia Seruiratu said this year’s meeting was a success as topics such as economic security, food security, health security, gender-based violence and drugs in the region were discussed.

“Fiji made significant contributions, and it was good to hear the best practices, the changes in legislations not only in Fiji but the other Pacific Island countries as well.”

“We look forward to be part of the Parliamentary Working Group as a resolution of this meeting, to look at the future of PIPG and particularly its link to the Pacific Islands Forum and other bodies as we have been part of the group that will take this organisation forward.”

Parliaments that were represented in this year’s meeting included Cook Islands, Fiji, French Polynesia, Hawaii, Niue, Palau, Rapa Nui, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Walis and Futuna.

The Ngibtal Declaration on ‘Human Security in the Pacific Islands’ was unanimously adopted at the end of today’s meeting and Fiji looks forward to hosting the next PIPG Conference in Fiji from the 25th to the 29th of August, 2025.
