Youths call for more partnership with Parliament
70 youths from around the country converged at Navoci Village in Nadi yesterday for the three-day National Youth Leadership Training Camp organised by the Network of Youths for Integrity in partnership with the Ministry of Youth.
Event Coordinator and Navoci Village Youth Council Member, Ratu Sailosi Raimoqe Dawai said that the aim of the event was to prepare young leaders to understand their roles in the electoral process, be competent and to become role models of integrity.
Mr Dawaie was grateful that the Civic Education team of Parliament team accepted their invitation to participate as he believes that youths of today need to equip themselves with the right knowledge about the procedures and how Parliament works.
“The presentation was very informative and totally different in the sense that we hear about Parliament in classrooms and in tertiary schools, but it is totally different when we hear it from people who actually work in Parliament,” Ratu Dawai said.
He hopes that in the future, youth organisation and communities will continue to be partners with Parliament.
Mr Apisalome Colavanuakava, a final-year law student at the University of Fiji, said he was grateful with the Parliament presentation as it was interesting to learn more about the democratic process.
He encouraged youths to be involved in the law making process and to participate in activities organised by the Parliament secretariat like Youth Parliament.
Privileged to be part of the Youth Training camp, Avikesh Kumar, a youth originally from Navua said that people often have different assumptions about what goes on in Parliament.
“Having the right people to inform youths about the works and procedures of Parliament is very interesting and the presentation as a whole has been an ‘eye-opener’,” Mr Kumar said.
The Civic Education team also erected tents and displays and also answered queries from participating youths.
The event will be officially opened today by the Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon. Laisenia Tuitubou and will end tomorrow, Saturday 13th January 2018.
