Fijian Parliament delegation welcomed by the Fiji High Commission and Fijian diaspora in London

The Fijian Parliament delegation, led by the Speaker of Parliament the Hon. Filimone Jitoko, received a warm welcome from His Excellency Mr Jovilisi Suveinakama, Fiji’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, together with the High Commission staff and members of the Fijian diaspora in London.

In his remarks, High Commissioner Suveinakama described the occasion as an honour for both the Mission and the broader diaspora community.

“The Hon. Speaker is no stranger to London, having served as High Commissioner from 1996 to 2001,” he noted. “The delegation may be small, but it carries significant weight – especially as Fiji moves towards general election. To host our Parliamentarians here, in the country where the Westminster model began, is truly an honour.”

The High Commissioner also acknowledged the representatives from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office; the Chief Executive Officer of the Fiji Rugby Union, Mr Koli Sewabu, and his team; as well as representatives of Tourism Fiji.

He expressed deep appreciation for the unwavering support of the Fijian diaspora, saying, “The strength of the High Commission is our people. The hands of the diaspora continue to be the backbone of our work here in London.”

The Hon. Speaker highlighted the purpose of the delegation’s visit, explaining that the Fijian Parliament had been invited by the CPA UK Branch to engage with the UK Parliament – often referred to as the “Mother of Parliaments.”

“We are here on a mission. Over the next few days, we hope to work closely with the UK Parliament to strengthen our own system of governance,” he said. “The Legislature is responsible for enacting the laws that govern our country, and this visit offers us an opportunity to improve transparency, accountability, and the overall effectiveness of our processes. We are here to observe, to learn, and to grow.”

Hon. Jitoko also conveyed his gratitude to the Fijian diaspora. “To our diaspora, we remain forever grateful for all you have done and continue to do for our country. As you fly the Fiji flag abroad, know that you are not alone – you are supported by your fellow Fijians at home in all that you do.”

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade the Hon. Sakiasi Ditoka, echoed the Speaker’s sentiments, emphasising the delegation’s commitment to strengthening the democratic arm of Government and building a legacy for future generations. He noted that public debate, including discourse on social media, reflects a democracy under test – highlighting the responsibility of leaders to safeguard democratic principles.

He further outlined Fiji’s positive economic outlook, citing last year’s record visitor arrivals as evidence of growing confidence in the nation’s stability and the progress achieved through renewed diplomatic engagements in Suva.

Member of Parliament Hon. Faiyaz Koya thanked the Hon. Speaker for his leadership in bringing the delegation to London, underscoring the importance of returning with meaningful insights.

“Before we left Fiji, the Hon. Speaker stressed that this visit was not political in nature but focused squarely on advancing what is best for the nation,” he said. He also acknowledged the substantial contribution of Fijians abroad, especially those in the United Kingdom – whose remittances play a critical role in supporting the national economy.

The formalities concluded with a dinner hosted by the High Commission, followed by an engaging talanoa session.
