Commonwealth Day Message – Speaker, Hon. Filimone Jitoko

On this Commonwealth Day, I am delighted to join you in celebrating the enduring spirit of our Commonwealth family. This year’s theme, ‘Together We Thrive,’ resonates profoundly with us, especially as a small island nation committed to fostering unity, peace and progress. The theme highlights the importance of fostering strong and connected communities that support and empower their members, enabling meaningful progress.

The Commonwealth, comprising 56 independent member countries, stands firm on values enshrined in the Commonwealth Charter.

For Fiji, these principles are not just ideals; they are the very fabric of our society. Our shared history within the Commonwealth has continually inspired us to build robust and connected communities that support each other through collective strength and shared vision. It has also very importantly informed and supported our desire to strengthen parliamentary democracy since independence.

As we embrace this year’s theme, we are reminded of the importance of connection, innovation, and transformation. Our journey as an island nation has shown us that when we come together, we can overcome challenges and create opportunities for all. The theme underscores the importance of fostering strong and connected communities, which is essential for our sustainable development and resilience in the face of global challenges. It also emphasises the need for inclusive decision-making and the empowerment of our often isolated and vulnerable communities through the institution of Parliament and the culture of parliamentary democracy.

Fiji’s efforts in fostering parliamentary democracy are a testament to our commitment to the values of the Commonwealth and particularly our membership of and commitment to the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (‘CPA’). Some of the fundamental principles of the CPA are democracy and the rule of law; good governance; equality and equity; sustainable development; cultural diversity and inclusion; peace and security; and education and knowledge-sharing.

Parliament recognises the significance of empowering our citizens and ensuring that every voice is heard and valued in our legislative processes. Through our parliamentary activities, we strive to enhance transparency, accountability and inclusivity. Since the end of last year, Parliament’s Standing Committees have been busy and out and about in communities throughout the country conducting inquiries and consultations on new and amendment Bills for small businesses, child protection, land and so forth. They have also been engaged with key stakeholders and the public as part of their scrutiny of Government ministries/departments/agencies annual reports and oversight of the Executive.

These endeavours are not just part of the normal business of Parliament but also serve to connect our communities to Parliament, legislators and even the key agencies that are responsible for implementing laws and Government policies.

Our commitment and continuous participation in the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians, and the Commonwealth Parliamentarians with Disabilities network further strengthens our resolve to promote democratic principles and good governance.

These networks provide invaluable platforms for sharing best practices, addressing common challenges, and fostering mutual support among member countries.

Most importantly at the local level, these initiatives facilitate Parliament’s engagement and connection to vulnerable groups such as people with disabilities, women and girls, rural communities, children and youth, and the elderly.

Parliament’s functions go beyond making laws, representing, oversight and scrutiny. Parliament’s functions also plays a crucial role in promoting social inclusion by ensuring that all citizens, regardless of their background, have a voice in the legislative process.

As we celebrate Commonwealth Day, let us reaffirm our dedication to the principles of family, unity and peace. Together, we can build a future where every member of our society thrives, and our communities are empowered to achieve meaningful progress.

May this day inspire us all to continue working towards a brighter and more prosperous future for our beloved Fiji and the entire Commonwealth family.

I wish you all a happy Commonwealth Day.
