‘Parliament Bus’ programme reaches out to Levuka and the Western Division

The ‘Parliament Bus’ programme, an educational outreach initiative for the Parliament of Fiji, will begin its programme this year in Levuka, targeting four secondary schools and one special school.

The programme aims to enhance the understanding of the parliamentary roles and functions among secondary school students and teachers.

From Monday, 11 to Wednesday, 14 February, the programme will be conducted in Levuka before moving to Rakiraki from Monday, 19 to Tuesday, 20 and will conclude in Tavua from Wednesday, 21 to Friday, 24 February.

In total, 15 schools across the region will be part of this educational endeavour.

The programme is structured around a 30-minutes presentation on the role and function of the Fijian Parliament, an interactive Q&A session with prizes to engage students further.

Participants will also have the opportunity to view a display featuring banners of significant parliamentary figures, including Speakers of Parliament, Prime Ministers, and Leaders of the Opposition, along with other parliamentary items such as the Senate’s mace, sand-timer, copies of the Hansard report, Annual Reports, and an old wig.

This initiative has been made possible through the support of the Governments of Australia, Japan and New Zealand, under the UNDP Fiji Parliament Support Project.

The Parliament of Fiji encourages the students and teachers of the selected schools to take full advantage of this programme, which aims to inspire and educate Fiji’s future leaders on the pivotal role of parliamentary governance in our country.

Schools in the other divisions, especially those in the outer islands, will be visited later in the year.
