At the end of the 4th Pacific Islands Parliamentary Group (PIPG) Conference in Koror, Palau last year, the former Speaker and current President of the Republic of Fiji, His Excellency Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu announced that Fiji would host the 5th PIPG Conference. An announcement that was greatly welcomed by all Members of the PIPG.
On the future of the cooperation of legislative branches in the Pacific, a Working Group, consisting of French Polynesia, Tonga, Solomon Islands, Palau and Fiji, has been mandated to analyse the options proposed by the PIPG Secretariat. The Working Group met last month and will report back to all PIPG Members for approval before the 5th PIPG Conference in Fiji.
Last year, the Ngibtal Declaration on ‘Human Security in the Pacific Islands’ was unanimously adopted at the end of the conference.
